  • Guardians' Andres Gimenez: Registers steal in loss

    Rotowire Sep 8, 2022

Gimenez went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Royals.

Gimenez continued his solid start to September with his third straight multi-hit effort. Over his last seven games, he's gone 9-for-25 (.360) with two steals and three runs scored, though he hasn't hit a home run or recorded an RBI in that span. The second baseman is up to a .305/.372/.483 slash line with 17 steals, 15 homers, 60 RBI and 52 runs scored through 122 contests this season.

  • Guardians' Emmanuel Clase: Save streak ends

    Rotowire Sep 8, 2022

Clase (2-4) took the loss and a blown save Wednesday versus the Royals, allowing two runs on a hit and three walks over two-thirds of an inning.

Clase's blown save was his first since May 9, and the earned runs he gave up were his first since Aug. 6. MJ Melendez accounted for the tying run with an RBI single, and Salvador Perez followed up with a sacrifice fly to walk it off. It's important to keep in mind this was Clase's fourth appearance in the last five days, so some slight fatigue may have played a role in the poor result. Clase has had few hiccups this year, as evidenced by his 1.39 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 59:10 K:BB through 58.1 innings. He's now 31-for-34 in save chances.

  • Guardians' Cody Morris: Effective over four innings

    Rotowire Sep 8, 2022

Morris allowed three hits and a walk while striking out two over four scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Royals.

The Guardians were expected to have more of a bullpen game, but Morris was able to throw 61 pitches (36 strikes) in a decent second career outing. It was an improvement over his debut, in which he allowed three runs (two earned) over two innings to the Mariners. Morris may not approach a full starter's workload as the Guardians tread carefully with the high-end prospect, but the right-hander should continue to see regular work with Zach Plesac (hand) and Aaron Civale (forearm) out. Morris lines up for a home outing versus the Angels next week, though it's unclear if he'll be able to build up his pitch count enough to realistically have a chance to qualify for a potential win.

  • Guardians' Tyler Freeman: Sits after four straight starts

    Rotowire Sep 7, 2022

Freeman is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

After going 5-for-17 with two runs and an RBI while starting in each of the past four games, Freeman will take a seat for the series finale. Though Owen Miller will check into the lineup in the rookie's stead Wednesday, Freeman still appears to have the edge on the final spot in Cleveland's regular starting nine.

  • Guardians' Austin Hedges: Gets Wednesday off

    Rotowire Sep 7, 2022

Hedges is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

He'll be getting some routine maintenance after catching in each of the past three games while going 2-for-7 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored. Luke Maile will be behind the plate Wednesday, forming a battery with starting pitcher Cody Morris.

  • Guardians' Jose Ramirez: Plates two runs

    Rotowire Sep 7, 2022

Ramirez went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Royals.

Ramirez has hit a bit of a lull of late, having produced no home runs or stolen bases in his last nine games while batting .206 over that stretch. He was at least able to come through with a clutch hit in Tuesday's win, as he broke a 0-0 stalemate in the third inning with a two-out, two-run single to boost his MLB-leading RBI total to 108. Ramirez will start at third base and bat third in Wednesday's series finale, per Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

  • Guardians' James Karinchak: Posts first save

    Rotowire Sep 7, 2022

Karinchak struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Royals.

Regular closer Emmanuel Clase had pitched three straight days, so he was presumably unavailable Tuesday. Karinchak stepped up and needed just 12 pitches (eight strikes) to deliver his first save of the season. He had a rough return to the majors with three runs allowed in his first two appearances, but Karinchak has since rattled off a 24-inning scoreless streak with a save, four holds and a win in his last 22 outings. For the year, he has a 1.04 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 43:13 K:BB through 26 innings while reclaiming a setup role in a strong Guardians bullpen.

  • Guardians' Shane Bieber: Excellent in win over Royals

    Rotowire Sep 7, 2022

Bieber (9-8) allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven over eight innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Royals.

Bieber limited the damage to a Salvador Perez solo shot in the fourth inning. This matched Bieber's second-longest outing of the season, and he's now allowed one earned run in three of his last four starts. The Guardians' ace trimmed his ERA to 2.96 with a 1.06 WHIP and 171:34 K:BB through 167 innings over 26 starts this year. He's lined up for a road start this weekend against the Twins if Cleveland takes advantage of Thursday's off day to get by with a four-man rotation this week.

  • Guardians' Cody Morris: Starting in bullpen game

    Rotowire Sep 7, 2022

Morris will start Wednesday's game against the Royals in what's expected to be a bullpen day for the Guardians, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

In his return from the 60-day injured list Sept. 2 in what also marked his MLB debut, Morris struck out three and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks over two innings to take a loss against the Mariners. Though the Guardians plan on developing Morris as a traditional starter, he looks like he may deployed as a glorified opener while the Guardians are missing two members of the rotation in Zach Plesac (hand) and Aaron Civale (forearm). Due to the expanded September roster, the Guardians have two stretched-out relievers in Kirk McCarty and Konnor Pilkington who are capable of covering multiple innings behind Morris. As such, Morris likely won't be asked to work deep into his starts and may struggle to qualify for wins.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Rare day off Tuesday

    Rotowire Sep 6, 2022

Naylor is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Royals.

Naylor had started 16 straight games, hitting .200/.279/.317 with two home runs and two steals in 60 at-bats over that span. Owen Miller will start at first base and bat sixth.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Dominating in Double-A

    Rotowire Sep 6, 2022

Bibee has put up a 1.29 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 57:9 K:BB through 55.2 innings in 10 starts since his promotion to Double-A Akron.

Those are spectacular returns, though they come with the caveat that Bibee hasn't struck out nearly as many hitters as he did while cruising through High-A -- his K/9 at the lower level was 13.1, and it's 9.3 in Double-A. The other caveat is that Bibee is a 23-year-old college arm in his first professional season. That said, he's touched 99 mph with his fastball this year, and there's certainly room for that in the big leagues. Bibee's ultimate role remains an open question, but he's showing great command of good stuff, and that makes him an intriguing dynasty prospect.

  • Guardians' Oscar Gonzalez: Delivers game-winning hit

    Rotowire Sep 6, 2022

Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI in the Guardians' 6-5 extra-inning win over the Royals on Monday.

Both of Gonzalez's RBI came on his one-out double in the top of the 10th inning, which proved to be the difference in the Guardians' one-run triumph. Gonzalez has stepped back into an everyday role in the outfield since being activated from the injured list Aug. 2, slashing .280/.309/.432 with three home runs, one stolen base and 12 RBI in 30 games over the past month.

  • Guardians' Myles Straw: Logs 16th steal

    Rotowire Sep 6, 2022

Straw went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Monday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Royals.

Straw delivered an RBI single in the second inning and added another hit and a steal in the ninth. The outfielder has had an awful last few weeks, going 10-for-89 (.112) in 27 contests since the start of August. He's occasionally lost playing time in center field to Will Benson, though it's fair to say Straw is still drawing more starts than he should given his extended slump. For the season, the 27-year-old is slashing just .199/.274/.249 with no home runs, 24 RBI, 57 runs scored and 16 steals through 125 games.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Swats homer in win

    Rotowire Sep 6, 2022

Naylor went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Monday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Royals.

Naylor went yard in the sixth inning off of Royals starter Brady Singer to put the Guardians up 3-2. Through five games in September, Naylor has found a little consistency, going 5-for-20 (.250) with a homer, a double and two RBI. The 25-year-old continues to command a presence in the heart of the lineup with a .260/.315/.454 slash line, 17 long balls, 63 RBI, 36 runs scored and five stolen bases through 99 contests.
