Electrons of oxygen

Check out the blackboard. That box on the left has all of the information you need to know about one element. It tells you the mass of one atom, how many pieces are inside, and where it should be placed on the periodic table.

In the next section we're going to cover electron orbitals or electron shells. This may be a new topic to some of you.

Electrons In The Shells

Take a look at the picture below. Each of those colored balls is an electron. In an atom, the electrons spin around the center, also called the nucleus. The electrons like to be in separate shells/orbitals. Shell number one can only hold 2 electrons, shell two can hold 8, and for the first eighteen elements shell three can hold a maximum of eight electrons. As you learn about elements with more than eighteen electrons you will find that shell three can hold more than eight. Once one shell is full, the next electron that is added has to move to the next shell.

So... for the element of OXYGEN, you already know that the atomic number tells you the number of electrons. That means there are 8 electrons in an oxygen atom. Looking at the picture, you can see there are two electrons in shell one and six in shell two.

Examples of Compounds with Oxygen

Does oxygen have 8 electrons?

The number eight also means that oxygen has eight protons in the nucleus. The number of protons and the number of electrons are always the same in an element that is neutral and has no charge. Therefore oxygen has 8 electrons. You will find that the atomic weight of oxygen is about 16.

What is electron of oxygen?

Looking at the periodic table, you can see that Oxygen has 8 electrons. Based on the order of fill above, these 8 electrons would fill in the following order 1s, 2s and then 2p. So Oxygen's electron configuration would be O 1s22s22p4.

How many electron does oxygen have?

Now you can figure out how many electrons, protons and neutrons Oxygen has: Atomic number (which is always the smaller of the two numbers) is 8. Hence 8 protons. Because the atom is neutral, there are also 8 electrons.

Does oxygen have 2 electrons?

In each electron shell, there are different numbers of electrons. The first shell can only fit two electrons, and the second shell fits eight. Oxygen, number 8 in the periodic table, has eight electrons, 2 in the first shell and 6 in the second.
